Steve Foston explains the logic behind the Squeak name. And it’s not because he speaks Dolphin.

Say That Again?

Picture this. It’s a Thursday. It’s the afternoon. In fact it’s late afternoon. It’s raining outside. You’re in a meeting and some blokes in suits come in to tell you about a company. Your mind wanders off. Your train is in 45 minutes... “What’s on telly tonight” you muse... BANG

One of the blokes tells you the company name. SQUEAK. That’s not a proper name you think so you ask him why he came up with such a daft name. Especially since the meeting is about Community Safety. Well bingo! That’s the point. A serious topic which is usually cluttered by dull companies. Squeak is different. It’s a registered social enterprise, so it’s right at the heart of the Big Society. It’s about people helping to sort out their own problems. It’s about bringing experts together who’ve dealt with the things you are wrestling with. It’s about a new way of thinking that doesn’t assume your organisation has loads of money to spend.

The name Squeak comes from the long standing view amongst academics and practitioners that community safety is made up of a series of interconnecting machines. These machines have cogs. The cogs get stuck and the whole thing squeaks and then grinds to a halt. Oil is needed. The cogs need greasing so that

The Third Sector widens the range of services and resources available to the vulnerable in our communities. they begin to turn again. That’s what Squeak (the company) does. It’s a registered social enterprise; a limited liability partnership. That means it’s not a big IT company, or a big consultancy, or a big anything. Squeak is a group of professionals who have come together to help make the cogs of community safety turn again. It’s made up of experts, volunteers, charities and public organisations who know lots about community safety, and want to share their ideas with you and your organisation. They want to work together, look for ways of getting the best value for small budgets, want advice about affordable IT systems, and want to meet regularly to swap ideas and be kept up to date with news of funding streams.

Above all Squeak is about making sense of the changing world we operate in, and of understanding that the relationship between ‘The Authorities’ and ‘The Community’ is changing. And is changing fast.

We’re not a big company

Squeak is a registered social enterprise. It’s a limited liability partnership owned by it’s members.
